Hello! It’s us – the romantically entangled couple behind The Big Loop and Places Please. We wish you were on this adventure with us, but hope you enjoy following along.
Over the past few years, we have been living in our tiny apartment on the un-ceded Algonquin Territory otherwise known as Ottawa, Ontario. Leaving behind (most of) our comfortable life filled with plants, books, and cozy blankets, we decided to quit our jobs, leave the city, and plan an epic camping road-trip across America.
In the fall of 2014, we decided to test-drive this idea by taking a week and a half drive through New England. We called it the Little Loop. This adventure is much bigger and much longer.
This blog is a way for us to write home to family and friends and have a space to share our thoughts, adventures, and mistakes while we navigate this gorgeous continent. If all goes according to plan, the trip will last about ten months and will take us from Ontario to Florida to California to the Yukon and then back home. We have our rusty 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan (thanks dad!), a radio, a few books, and our camping gear.
We’ve created a map and rough itinerary for the trip. The map can be found here. Check it out! Please feel free to provide us with suggestions by commenting on this (or any) page.
Coming from progressive spaces, we’d like to continue social justice work during our trip. What that means to us is developing relationships with local folks, learning about their communities, and being mindful of what we leave behind. Reports on these experiences will appear on this website as well as the (highly recommended) weekly newsletter What’s Left This Week. With that in mind, let us know of communities or people we can connect with.
